We are just a normal family. A family on a journey. A Real Family Journey.

Halloween Photo Booth Shoot

Well howdy folks! It's Daddy Journey here for the first time. Now, writing is not my thing at all, I'm usually behind the camera and I'm very happy there but for today's blog post I thought I'd put the proverbial pen to paper and write a little bit about the following photos and how you too can do something similar at home.

I'm pretty lucky that over the years I have collected a pretty decent amount of photo gear (thanks Matt!) and it has helped me to create these professional looking photos but you can easily do something similar yourself with just a point and shoot camera or even a smartphone. All you need is a cool background, a camera with flash, some props and something to put your camera on so you can be hands-free.

We used a bright yellow photography backdrop but you can use a blank wall in our outside your home, a curtain, or even a bedsheet stuck to the wall to provide a simple background which will help you pop out and be the centre of attention. Once you have a suitable background you can then set up your camera.

For this part, I would recommend having one of your helpers stand just in front of the background so you can get the framing right. Don't be afraid to shoot a little extra around them as you can always crop the photo but it's pretty hard to stick someone's head back on! Now is the time to secure your camera. If you have a tripod then that's perfect but if not just find a way of propping up your camera so that you can be hands-free and concentrate on having some giggles. I have been known to grab a stack of boxes and books to rest my camera on when I haven't had my tripod to hand. As long as it's safe then anything goes.

My fancy camera has Wi-Fi built in so I could remotely trigger it using my iPhone but a self-timer can work too it just requires you to press the shutter after every shot. If you are using your iPhone to take the photos then you can use the volume buttons on the Apple headphones to release the shutter. Also some apps such as VSCO cam allow you to use the entire screen as a shutter button making it even easier to take the photo.

Now you don't always have to use flash but I personally think that it gives that desired photobooth look plus it freezes the action which is useful for those excited little (and not so little) ones.

The props we used were bought from The Range but you can pick them up from Amazon, eBay or you can even make them yourself. Find a few of your favourites and don't be afraid to share!

Now just get in front of the camera and have a laugh. Seize this opportunity to take photos which you don't usually get around to. I can't remember the last time Jo and I were in the same photo together! Plus it's perfect for Christmas too, so there's no excuse not to send some silly family cards this year!
