What a beautiful Easter weekend we had. The sun was shining, the kids were happy and Paul had a full 5 days off work. Woohoo! We were filled with excitement, anticipation and a few nerves for our weekend at Grandad’s. We were feeling a little apprehensive as this was our first visit to Grandad’s since deciding on a plant-based diet. Eek! We had visions of arriving and having to defend our choices and spend the next 2 days living off toast! However, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Both Grandad and his wife Julia were very supportive and accommodating and produced the most fantastic food spread you could imagine! We are very lucky to have such a supportive family. We really were made to feel very welcome and on top of the kind words and lovely spread, the kids were thoroughly spoilt too!

After lunch, Grandad and Julia set up a fantastic Easter egg hunt for the kids. Fin says this was his favourite part of the whole weekend. (Chocolate monster!) They both came away with buckets full of eggs and roses in their cheeks.

Next, we had a chance to hold some baby chicks! They were only 3 days old and quite simply the sweetest little babies. Grandad and Julia have pet chickens and we were lucky enough to arrive in time for their most recent hatching. Pops loved holding the chicks and returned to give them cuddles every 5 minutes! (Lucky chicks??!) Fin was also very confident and gentle holding the chicks. (Proud mummy!) The chicks loved the warmth of our hands. As soon as we held them they would snuggle in and fall asleep. Sooooo cute! Loved them. (I think this was my favourite bit of the weekend too! He he!)

We then headed out to the beach. It was really windy down by the coast so it really blew the cobwebs away… and the ice creams the kids had! It literally blew Fins ice cream onto the floor which as I’m sure you can imagine caused endless tears. However, Pops came to the rescue and completely unprompted gave her ice cream to Fin. Best big sister ever!

The next day we woke to feed the big chickens. They enjoyed a feast of potatoes, avocado and vegetables. I have to say even their lunch looked delicious! Lucky chickens! I think Fin was a little unsure of the bigger chickens but Pops was loving every second of it.

Afterwards, we went to a car museum and had a bit of home education fun. There was so much to take in that I think we needed more than one day there really but the kids had so much fun. There was a fantastic play area there and I think you’ll agree from the photos that even us grown-ups had a giggle too!

After a few sad goodbyes to the chicks and chickens, we bid farewell to Grandad and Julia. Exhausted and elated we returned home armed with a lifetime supply of Easter goodies! As we left through the New Forest we saw some lovely cows, horses and donkeys all free in the wild. It was the perfect end to a perfect weekend. Thank you Grandad and Julia.
