Oh my goodness, I can’t tell you how good this play dough recipe is. It smells sooo good and has such a lovely soft and squidgy feel to it. I don’t think the kids knew whether to eat it or play with it! As you can see this recipe is completely taste-safe but I wouldn’t advise eating lots of it due to the salt content. (And I don’t think it would taste as good as it smells!)

I was after doing a scented play dough recipe and since it’s summer’s here in good old England I thought what better way to celebrate than with an ice cream play dough recipe. I simply had to do a mint choc chip recipe because let’s face it, it’s one of the best ice-cream flavours in all the land but I was stumped on the next idea. I didn’t think it was very appropriate to whack a load of rum and raisins into the mix and we have done chocolate like a hundred times. So I had a rummage through the kitchen cupboards and came up with a little inspiration and landed upon a tutti-frutti inspired idea. So if your little budding chefs fancy opening up their own ice cream parlour then these are the recipes for you.
Makes enough for 2 -4 children
Ingredients
  • 2 cups Flour
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil any oil will do but we used olive oil
  • 1/4 cup salt
  • 1 tablespoon cream of tartar
For the mint flavour:
  • 2 teaspoons peppermint essence
  • 2-3 drops green food colouring
  • 1 handful fresh chopped mint leaves
  • 1 handful cacao nibs (they don't melt like chocolate)
For the lemon flavour:
  • 2 teaspoons Sicilian lemon essence
  • 2-3 drops yellow food colouring
  • 2 teaspoons grated lemon zest
  • 1 handful cake baking citrus peel
Instructions
  1. Mix all of the dry ingredients and the chopped mint/lemon zest
  2. Add the food colouring and peppermint/lemon essence to the boiling water and pour into the dry mix
  3. Using a wooden spoon begin to combine the ingredients
  4. Knead the dough together (PLEASE BE CAREFUL AS THE DOUGH WILL BE EXTREMELY HOT AT THIS POINT)If it's too sticky add more flour
  5. When you have your dough add the cacao nibs/citrus peel and combine
