This writing tray has been such a winner. What starts out as harmless spelling practice turns into a winter wonderland for the lego men or a simple sensory experience! www.realfamilyjourney.com #unschooling #handwriting #christmas

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, everywhere you go…

Awww, I love this time of year. Everything is so much more magical and sparkly. The kids seem to get totally wrapped up with Christmas themed learning and open their arms to any possible chance at getting covered in glitter! This is why this writing tray has been such a winner. I kid you not that this has been played with every day and I am not laughing when I tell you that I've had to hoover the floor every single time they use it! What starts out as harmless spelling practice turns into a winter wonderland for the lego men or a simple sensory experience that requires them to run their hands back and forth throughout the salty sand. You've been warned, make sure you cover those carpets.

I often get shocked looks when I show pictures of my kids doing worksheets or spelling practice. They quite often say things like, "But I thought you unschooled?" It makes me giggle because the idea of unschooling to us is to support our children's interests and offer (not force) learning possibilities to them. Both of my two love doing worksheets or 'school' work if its fun and in line with their interests. Christmas is most definitely one of their interests so I thought I'd offer up this word tray and it was gratefully received. On the other hand, if they weren't fussed by it then that wouldn't be an issue either. There is no 'need' to do these activities if they aren't interested but 9 times out of 10 they lap it up.

So onto the tray…

What you will need:

  • A drinks tray
  • Salt, sugar or sand (sugar can get a little sticky)
  • Glitter (optional)
  • Candy canes or candy cane tree decorations
  • Card and pens for writing out the words.
  • Protective floor mat.

Simply write out your festive words making them age appropriate for your child and let them have fun decorating your living room in sparkly salt! Enjoy!!
