Best Ever Play Dough Recipe!

Well, do I have a treat in store for you or what? Fed up of play dough that cracks, becomes dry or costs the earth? Well, it is time to kiss goodbye to those problems once and for all with our best ever play dough recipe. (Tooting my own trumpet much?) Seriously though this recipe will leave you with taste safe, affordable, shiny and stretchy play dough that will last months. Yes, It really is that good.

Now, on to the recipe!



  • 2 cups plain flour

  • 2 tbsp coconut oil

  • 1/2 cup salt

  • 2 tbsp cream of tartar

  • 1 cup boiling water

  • few drops glycerine optional

Optional extras.

  • Food colouring

  • spices

  • essential oils

  • glitter

  • confetti

  • dried flowers

  • sprinkles


  1. Create a dry bowl and a wet bowl.

  2. Pop the flour, salt and cream of tartar in the dry bowl.

  3. Pop the water, coconut oil and glycerine in the wet bowl.

  4. If adding food colouring then pop it into the wet bowl. If adding glitter or spices then pop them into the dry bowl.

  5. Combine both bowls together and stir with a wooden spoon until cool enough to massage. (It will be hot for a while so be careful.)

  6. If your dough is too dry then add a few tablespoons of extra water at a time until you achieve the perfect consistency.

  7. Massage your dough until it is soft and elastic.

  8. Keep cling-filmed or covered in a container in the fridge when not in use.

  9. It should last up to four months but if it has loose parts added in it may deteriorate sooner. (Always check the dough before giving it to children to play with.)
