Mythologica Book Review & Giveaway!
Well, do I have a treat in store for you today or what?! I am reviewing a book that has been sent to us from Quarto books and honestly, I think that this may just be the most beautifully illustrated book that I have ever seen. (For real!)
This book is called Mythologica and is written by Steve Kershaw and illustrated by Victoria Topping. Mythologica is an encyclopedia of gods, monsters and mortals from ancient Greece.
This book uncovers the lives of 50 powerful gods, goddesses, mortals and monsters. Each character is detailed in a magnificently illustrated double-page spread punctuated with facts and tales from history. This book could stand alone as a piece of art. Victoria has captured the essence and fierce heart of each of these wonderful characters through stunning imagery and flamboyant colours. It really is a feast for the eyes and I have found myself falling in love with the gods the way the ancient Greeks themselves did.
I have learnt so much from this book. I have to confess that before receiving this title that the topic of ancient Greece was never on our radar but this stunning encyclopedia has made us hungry for so much more.
This book is what I would call a coffee table book. It is the kind of book to have on show, to be proud of. It is far superior to rest among the other mere mortals on the shelf. This book deserves to be shared, to be pawed over, to return to time and time again to keep your senses topped up with excitement and joy.
You all know that I am the crazy book lady and that as a family we use books as our main tool to educate but I can honestly say that this book is truly one of my favourites. (And there is a LOT to choose from so I don't take that statement lightly.) I know it will grow with the children and will be used time and time again. We have learnt so much from this book already but the artwork is just so, so stunning and really does make this book in a league of its own. It has even inspired some design crafts too!
The children were so excited about learning of these new magical characters that they felt compelled to create their own monsters and gods. It seems that they have got the hang of the ancient Greek names too as they are happily naming everything in the house. For example, Pops came up with the magical goddess of cherry blossom and her name is Cherrius. We have had the monster of chillies who burns your mouth whenever you say horrible things about someone and his name is Chillius. You see the pattern forming here?!
Honestly, though my friends, this book is a true keeper. It is beautiful, informative and has truly moved me to review it for you guys as it is fast becoming one of my favourite books of all time. I love it so much in fact that I have asked Quarto to send us a second copy for us to give away over on Instagram for our upcoming 5K giveaway. Be sure to go and follow us over there to be in with a chance of winning your very own copy!
I'll leave you with a couple of the kid's creations to hopefully inspire you to create your own too. If you would like to buy yourself a copy of this amazing book then you can grab one here.
As with all of my book reviews they are my true and honest thoughts. I would never share any products with you guys that I didn't truly feel brought happiness to our hearts and the education of our children.
