It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, everywhere you go… Awww, I love this time of year. Everything is so much more magical and sparkly. The kids seem to get totally wrapped up with Christmas themed learning and open their arms to any possible chance at getting covered in glitter! This is why this writing tray has been such a winner. I kid you not that this has been played with every day and I am not laughing when I tell you that I’ve had to hoover the floor every single time they use it! What starts out as harmless spelling practice turns into a winter wonderland for the lego men or a simple sensory experience that requires them to run their hands back and forth throughout the salty sand. You’ve been warned, make sure you cover those carpets. I often get shocked looks when I show pictures of my kids doing worksheets or spelling practice. They quite often say things like, “But I thought you unschooled?” It makes me giggle because the idea of unschooling to us is to support our children’s interests and offer (not force) learning possibilities to them. Both of my two love doing worksheets […]

This craft is so magical to me. You start with a few kitchen ingredients and after a few moments you end up with a crafting material that looks like porcelain. I love how this clay dries pure white. It looks so clean and crisp and lends itself perfectly to the snowy Christmas crafts. Don’t get me wrong I am also a huge fan of regular salt dough but nothing looks quite as polished as a hanging pure white snowflake. The kids really enjoy working with this clay. It feels very different from the regular building doughs that we play with and brings a new sensory element for them. It is much drier and smoother and quite often I would catch one of the just stroking the freshly rolled out dough just for the pure enjoyment of it! Hubby also got involved once he felt the texture of it (see the snowman). So, how do we make this wonderous dough I hear you ask? Well, it is so simple and magically transforms from something quite ordinary to something so satisfyingly beautiful. On to the recipe… Recipe (Makes approximately 12 cookie sized ornaments dependant on cutter size.) 1/2 cup cornflour1 cup baking […]
I have a super speedy craft for you today guys! It is so lovely to find natures gifts and turn them into something magical for your home to cherish at Christmas time. Every year we have pine cones on our Christmas tree and my favourite bit of the whole process is going on a big nature walk to find our chosen ones. Getting outside in the cool crisp air for plenty of exercise and a treasure hunt to boot. What more could your kids ask for? Both of my two adore nature walks anyway but love taking their buckets with them to collect leaves, sticks and pine cones. When we get home we allow the pine cones to dry out and open up and then we can get on to the messy bit…glitter!! What you will need: Paint PVA glue Glitter Method: Simply mix a 50/50 mixture of paint and glue. Dip or brush the tips of your pine cones into the paint and (gently) sprinkle with glitter. (My kids didn’t get the gently memo but anyhoo!) Allow to dry and place in the branches of your Christmas tree or in a bowl by the fireplace. It really is that […]
Well, this recipe came as a bit of surprise I can tell you. I’m not a fan of mint confection usually but somehow managed to find myself the proud owner of a bottle of peppermint essence. (Long story!) Me being me I hated the idea of any waste so thought I would make a simple treat for the kids and boy, oh boy, was I shocked at how delicious they were. They are simply Christmas in a biscuit. I am now one hell of a peppermint fan. Who knew? These are so simple to make, making them the perfect bake with little ones. Your home will smell like icy peppermint and you, like me, will now be putting these on the Christmas traditions list. Enjoy!! Now, if these last long enough and you want to store any them for later then pop them into an airtight container and they will last for a few days. They will lose some of their crunch but will still be perfectly chewy and delicious. Don’t forget to tag us into your photos on the socials. We love seeing your bakes especially the festive treats made by you and your mini ones. Have a wonderful, […]
Every year my mini ones and I have several Christmas traditions to mark the run-up to the big day. One of which is we have a Christmas tea party when we sit down to watch the CBeebies Christmas panto. Now, this is our first vegan Christmas so I wanted to make it extra special and when I asked Fin what he wanted most at the tea party he screamed the words ‘chocolate’ and ‘cake’ at me! (He’s so my son!) Vegan chocolate cake has not gone so well for me in the past with it usually tasting of coconut, peanuts or being too dry to chew but we have hit the jackpot here. I hadn’t intended to blog this recipe as it was just meant for our quiet tea party but after the reactions from both vegan and non-vegans I felt it would be selfish not to share this awesome recipe. Really, it is truly delicious! So, as a description so you know what you’re getting yourself into, the bottom half of the cake tastes like Black Forest gateau and the top layer tastes like chocolate fudge cake! What’s not to love? The cake rises beautifully and the sponge tastes […]
